In May 2021, Bloomberg published a special feature headlined, “Vancouver Is the Hate Crime Capital in North America”, exposing how the city’s long history of anti-Asian racism has boiled over to a surge in attacks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Vancouver police data showed that Anti-Asian hate crimes increased almost eight-fold in Vancouver, correlating with the increases in COVID-19 cases since March 2019. However, the Vancouver police data most likely reflected underreported numbers of anti-Asian hate crime due to several factors, including flawed crime reporting systems. …

At Pandahug Educational Consulting, when working with children and adolescents with multicultural backgrounds, we include the following considerations in our practice:

  1. We practice self-awareness about our own multiple cultural identites and ensure that we maintain a sense of understanding, objectiveness and equality about cultural identities in our work. We work towards a nonhierarchical stance, and we respect all identities. We let the client guide us to understand issues related to the cultural identities of the client during sessions.
  2. We assess the multiple cultural identities of individual and family and their interactions. …

Compelling storytelling is one of the most impactful leadership skills.

A study by Uri Hasses of Princeton revealed surprising brain activity in audiences as they listened to a speaker tell a story. The results showed that not only did all of the listeners show similar brain activity during the story, the speaker and the listeners resonated in brain activity despite the fact that one person was producing language and the others were understanding it.

With this insight, research suggests that proper storytelling can allow audience members to think, feel, and respond the same way as a character in the story…

The ability to manage your emotions and remain calm under pressure has a direct link to your performance. 90% of top performers are skilled at managing their emotions in times of stress in order to remain calm and in control.

Although prolonged stress causes degeneration in the area of the brain responsible for self-control, stress (and the anxiety that comes with it) is necessary. Our brains take action only when we feel at least some level of stress. In fact, performance peaks under moderate levels of stress. As long as the stress isn’t prolonged, it’s harmless.

Secondary Students Admitted and Refused to First Choice at a High Ranking Canadian University in 2016

One of the most common questions that I hear from students in Canada is “What grades do I need to get in order to get into my dream Canadian university?”

Top-tier Canadian universities, like universities around the world, are becoming increasingly more selective every year. Every year, the quantity and quality of students applying to university increase, and each year, the bell curve of admissions shifts a little more to the right.

Clearly, it helps to have higher grades. The higher your grades, the more likely you will be accepted. In fact, in one of the best Canadian universities, all…

The College Board plans to implement a new yardstick it calls the “Environmental Context Dashboard.” The index is being referred to widely as the “adversity score.”

It measures factors such as crime rates and poverty levels in students’ neighborhoods to reflect their “resourcefulness to overcome challenges and achieve more with less,” according to David Coleman, the board’s chief executive officer.

Students are scored on a scale of 1 to 100 based on data from records such as the US Census and the National Center for Education Statistics. …

Canadian education is a prestigious world-class education. Canada accepts hundreds of thousands of international students every year. Most of them eventually obtain Canadian Permanent Residency.

Recently, the Canadian government has announced the expedited processing program — Student Direct Stream — that targets candidates applying from India, Philippines, China, or Vietnam.

In other words, student visas can be processed extremely quickly! For international students from India, Philippines, China, or Vietnam, the student visa processing time will take just 20 days.

If international students from these countries want to study in Canada at a post-secondary designated learning institution, they have to meet…

The quality of your extracurricular activities matters more than the number of activities in which you participate. Admissions committees at prestigious colleges typically look for students with significant extracurricular accomplishments in addition to strong academic credentials. Both focused students with a narrow extracurricular focus and well-rounded students with a variety of extracurricular activities can get into their dream college.

Extracurricular activities that distinguish you in the college admissions process include:

  1. Winning awards in competitions
  2. Getting elected to leadership positions
  3. Producing compelling research or beautiful art
  4. Performing meaningful community service
  5. Demonstrating talent in at least one extracurricular activity
  6. Activities that will…
